What does the course aim to provide?
The Specialist Paralegal Practitioner Qualification Courses aim to provide the experienced legal secretary/paralegal or support staff with a recognisable academic qualification confirmed by one of the UK’s leading law schools.
How is the course structured?
Each of the courses has between 6 and 20 modules. These should be read in order. As you progress through the course you are required to carry out assignments. These will help build your knowledge and give you an opportunity to test your skills and will be assessed with feedback given to you by the assessors.
How much time do you recommend to study for the course?
We recommend that each assignment should take between 2-3 hours to complete but there is no recommended period for studying.
How long can I take to complete the course?
The maximum amount of time given to complete a home study course is 18 months, however there is no minimum time period.
Are there any eligibility requirements to take the course?
Delegates should have a background in a legal environment e.g. Legal secretaries; Paralegals; H.R. Practitioners; Local government employees; Court staff; Police file managers; Claims handlers; Will writers; Company and commercial staff; Legal assistants transferring to another area of law and Solicitors requiring to update their knowledge.
Can I telephone CLT to book onto the courses?
There is a booking form attached to the brochure for the Specialist Paralegal Practitioner Qualification courses. The booking form explains the terms and conditions of booking and asks for all of the details we require to enable us to process your booking correctly. You may contact the Training Coordinator via telephone to express an interest in the course and discuss any questions you may have.
Do I have to make a payment to secure a place on the course?
A deposit of £100 is required.
This course appeals to me but I cannot afford to fund it all at once. What payment options do you offer?
There is an option to pay by standing order over a 6-month period. If you have any concerns please contact the Training Coordinator.

When are the enrolment dates for the course?
The home study course is available continuously throughout the year allowing you to enrol at any time. Tutorial courses commence: April & October 2009.
Once I am enrolled, how long will I need to wait before I receive the materials?
The course materials will be despatched to you by special delivery within 30 working days of your booking and payment arriving at CLT.
Am I required to attend any other courses to support my learning?
The materials you will receive provide all the information you need to enable you to complete the course. If these tasks are carried out, there will be no need to attend any other courses to help you complete the course.
What qualification do I get once I have completed the course?
You will be awarded a Specialist Paralegal Practitioner Award.
Who are the course tutors?
The course tutors are all experienced trainers, assessors and practitioners. Being experts in their field allows you to draw on their invaluable knowledge and skills.
Can I talk to the assessors direct?
Although the course does offer student support, this will be via email. The assessors are keen to help you and answer any questions you may have. Email is used to ensure the assessors address your questions fully and clearly, allowing you to refer back to the comments made as and when necessary.
What standard do I need to reach to pass my assignments?
To attain the standard for your assignments you must demonstrate:
Knowledge and understanding of the topics covered in the course modules.
The ability to apply your knowledge and skills to the problems presented - this can be demonstrated by reference to:
The correct law;
Reference to the relevant form(s), procedures and
Quoting the relevant professional rules.
If all of the above are demonstrated, then you will successfully pass each assignment. If you fail in any areas feedback will be given by the assessor on any areas where you need to improve.
How do I receive the feedback for my assignment? And how long will it take?
The result and any feedback will be given via letter within 21 working days.
How long will it take to get my certificate once I have completed the course?
Awards are issued twice yearly following graduation ceremonies that will be held at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
What happens if I fail an assignment?
If you follow the course and carry out the necessary tasks you should have no difficulty in reaching the required competence, however if this does happen you will be asked to resubmit your assignment.
Can I re-register for the course?
Should you wish to resit the course you may re-register to do so. You will be required to pay a re-registration fee, which is 10% of the full fee. You will receive a set of new assignments but not core materials unless there are changes in the law that have resulted in the materials being updated.
Can I do more than one subject area?
If you would like to take more than one Specialist Paralegal Practitioner Qualification then you can do so, however we recommend that you complete one course before moving on to another.
